Nabarun Bhattacharya (23 June 1948 – 31 July 2014) was an Indian writer in Bengali language. He was born at Berhampur, West Bengal. He was the only child of actor and playwright Bijon Bhattacharya and writer, activist Mahashweta Devi. His maternal grandfather was the writer from the Kallol era, Manish Ghatak. Visionary filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak was his great uncle.

Nabarun is a poet whose unabashed speaking and idealism gave him a cult status among his readers.

Bhattacharya’s “Ei Mrittu Upotokka Amar Desh Na” (translated into English as “This Valley of Death is Not My Country”) is the poet’s famous refusal to accept a nation that oppresses its people as his own.

This borrows from the idea that there are many Indias within India, and one may choose to refuse to identify with the India of the masculinist, upperclass, uppercaste, who survive on the blood of the marginalized.
In Nabarun’s writing there is never a blind adherence to an ideology and hero-worship, but rather a close reading of the hierarchical structures of class and society – of the lower and subaltern classes that are routinely crushed by the joint forces of multinational capitalism and political bankruptcy in the name of Communism. Despite a lifelong faith in Marxism, in solidarity movements, in proletarian resistance, and especially in the October Revolution, Nabarun’s writing is replete with references to and parody, sometimes virulent criticism, of the repressive regim.

A poet ...of the masses, of humanity  , a poet of ideology...Nabarun Bhattacharya.

Winged poetry

Money is flying in the air
You thought them to be butterflies
 And wrote it down
 A light, colorful poem.
Fighter planes are flying in the sky
You thought them as a flock of birds
 And wrote that down
 Multiple winged poems

 This is how
You mistook the bullet for lipstick
You thought the smoke of the bomb was a cloud
 Hence children's torn hands
 Heartbroken people, ruined hospitals
 Nothing caught your eye
Calling you stupid doesn't tell the whole story
 Wastepaper baskets also scream
They don't want to take your poetry
